Frequently asked questions
Getting started
Yes. The first trial class is free and carries no obligation. Just get in touch with us beforehand.
Of course. There are no prerequisites for starting. Body awareness and conditioning are built up gradually as you go.
No. Conditioning is built through the practice, not before it. Everyone works at their own pace and the instructor adjusts the intensity: nothing will be asked of you on day one that you cannot do.
That's the most common way. Most people arrive alone to their first class and train with the rest of the group from the first minute: exercises are done in pairs and you rotate partners. And if two of you want to come together, or a group of you, you are all welcome.
If you have a keikogi (training clothing) from another martial art, bring it. Otherwise, comfortable clothes are fine to start — preferably long-sleeved and reasonably hard-wearing. There's nothing to buy to get started; if you decide to continue, we'll guide you on the keikogi with no rush.
Regular classes are aimed at adults and at teenagers mature enough for them, always with a guardian's authorisation. There is no upper limit: what changes with the years is how you train, not whether you can.
The practice
In ninjutsu and the classical martial arts, the whole body is treated as a weapon: there are many forms of striking, locking and breaking. Alongside close combat, we also train with many kinds of traditional weapons.
Yes. Traditional weapons are part of the programme from the start, always with safe training replicas and a progression adapted to your level. You'll already try one in your trial class.
There is contact, yes: we work real technique in pairs. But progression is gradual, safety is part of the practice and there is no competition — nobody is trying to beat you. In your first weeks you'll mostly learn to fall and move without hurting yourself, which is the foundation of everything.
Ninjutsu is an eminently pragmatic science focused on self-protection and survival. A practitioner should be able to take directly applicable elements from it right from the start, though proper development takes time and dedication, as in any discipline.
It is not a combat sport: no competition, no scoring, no weight classes. It is a complete martial system of nine schools with centuries of history, covering unarmed combat, joint locks, movement and many traditional weapons. If you come from another art, you'll find a biomechanic and a way of understanding movement that are probably very different.
Within the Bujinkan there is a system of grades and belts that recognises your progress. What there isn't is competition: nobody scores anybody and there are no championships. From time to time the chance does come up to take part in a cultural event with a martial arts demonstration.
We always work in small groups, with the instructor's personal attention. The exact number changes over time, but the practice is always close up: you are corrected yourself, by name, in every class.
Two hours: preparing the body, technique alone or in pairs, and work with traditional weapons. Always at your own pace. There is often the chance to stay on a while afterwards to answer questions, go into technical or historical detail, or look at antiques and pieces of art.
Logistics
Fees start from €40 a month, depending on the format. The first class is free and commitment-free — write to us and we'll explain the options with no pressure.
In Barcelona city, mainly between Horta-Guinardó and Nou Barris (Vilapicina (L5), Valldaura (L3) and Llucmajor (L4) metro stops). The space varies by session — indoors and outdoors — so we tell you the exact spot when you book your trial class.
For any health matter that might affect you, consult a healthcare professional first and let the instructor know so it can be taken into account during classes.
There are several membership options so you can pick the one that fits your circumstances. That said, your progress will follow your consistency in the practice, both inside the dojo and outside it.
After the trial
Nothing to be afraid of: if you enjoyed it, we explain the formats and you decide at your own pace. There is no sign-up fee, no lock-in, no commitment of any kind. And if it's not for you, no problem — you leave with two hours of training and a good experience.
Of course. The Bujinkan is a community: these dojos belong to instructors we trust, in other parts of Catalonia.
