The lineage
The Bujinkan and its regulations
The organisation we train under: the nine schools that make it up, and the rules accepted by everyone who practises within it.
What is the Bujinkan?
The Bujinkan is an international organisation founded by master Hatsumi Masaaki that brings together 9 traditional schools of martial arts. Master Hatsumi was the sole heir to the transmission of these schools from the hands of master Takamatsu Toshitsugu:
- 01Gyokko-ryū Kosshijutsu (玉虎流骨指術)
- 02Kotō-ryū Koppōjutsu (虎倒流骨法術)
- 03Shinden Fudō-ryū Dakentaijutsu (神伝不動流打拳体術)
- 04Takagi Yōshin-ryū Jūtaijutsu (高木揚心流柔体術)
- 05Kuki Shinden-ryū Happō Bikenjutsu (九鬼神伝流八法秘剣術)
- 06Gikan-ryū Koppōjutsu (義鑑流骨法術)
- 07Togakure-ryū Ninpō (戸隠流忍法)
- 08Gyokushin-ryū Ninpō (玉心流忍法)
- 09Kumogakure-ryū Ninpō (雲隠流忍法)

Although different terms are used to describe the disciplines of each school (kosshijutsu, koppôjutsu, jûtaijutsu…), all of these concepts, with their own nuances, point to qualities shared by the practice of every one of them — qualities framed within ninjutsu.
Today these 9 martial traditions have been placed by master Hatsumi in the hands of different masters who hold the title of sôke (head of the family) of one school or another.
At our dojo we study mainly under the line of master Ishizuka, the latest sôke of the Gyokko school (one of the oldest in the Bujinkan, with a legacy of more than 800 years), and of dai shihan Renan Perpinyà, one of the first instructors in the Iberian Peninsula and a direct student of Ishizuka sensei.
Practising the kosshijutsu of Gyokko-ryû builds the foundations of an integrative bodily science of combat and, at the same time, opens the door to developing the technical nuances required by the other schools.
Rules
The Guidelines for Admission to the Bujinkan state that only those who accept and are willing to follow the rules below may be admitted:
- Read each and every one of these precepts carefully and agree with all of them.
- Only those who have shown they possess absolute integrity and true self-control as people may become members.
- A medical certificate may be required, and those with serious physical or psychological conditions that could pose a danger to themselves or to the other students may be excluded.
- People with criminal or unlawful behaviour will not be admitted.
- Anyone who does not obey the doctrines of the Bujinkan, or who commits acts considered shameful, will be expelled.
Only those who undertake not to compromise the Bujinkan, or to bring action against it, in relation to accidents that may arise from training — whether inside the dojo or anywhere else — may be admitted. This is an extremely important point, since accidents are inherent to the practice of martial arts itself. Those who do not understand this significant fact cannot be admitted. The Bujinkan Dojo accepts no responsibility for accidents that may occur during training, regardless of the place or the country.
Those who agree to become members of the Bujinkan must hold whatever licences may be required. The power and the virtue of the warrior are secured by loyalty, respect and love among friends of the martial arts.
The tradition of the Bujinkan teaches us the universality of nature and of human life, this being the goal of the martial arts that must enlighten us in our understanding of the mysteries that exist. We must learn that the secret of taijutsu lies in the foundations of peace. If you study this, you will walk the true path of the immovable heart, of the unchanging spirit.
Initial training begins with taijutsu.
The grading system begins with the Kyû levels (beginners), and beyond those there are up to 15 Dan grades.

The Bujinkan Dojo has become, in its very nature, ever more international. As buyû (friends in arms), we must respect one another and work together so as not to create further taboos, putting our martial artist's heart first and giving weight to the true aims of the martial arts. Only in this way will we become people full of fundamental virtues.
Anyone who does not respect the rules set out here will be expelled.
Every path begins with a single step.
Yours asks for nothing you do not already have.
Not fitness, not experience, not certainty.
Only the decision to walk through the door once
and let the body understand the rest.
